Have you ever wondered how we can bring a bit of the world home?
We can help do just that! International Experience USA (iE-USA) is a non-profit high school student exchange organization approved by the US Department of State. We place international high school students with host families in the Bellevue area.
Have you considered hosting an exchange student? It’s a great way to learn about another culture without leaving your home!
Roy Rolin and his wife Emily have enjoyed learning more about new cultures while also creating strong family bonds with the 10 exchange students they have hosted during the last 9 years.
“They’ve all been very different in their own way,” says Roy, “and it’s given us a unique experience every time.”
Being a host dad gave Roy the opportunity to fill much-needed support roles for his students. He discovered the joy in becoming a true father-figure for a German girl whose dad had passed away when she was only 7. He embraced the role of mentor for a Swiss boy who nervously anticipated his (compulsory) military service upon his return home. And he relished the surprise of a lifetime when a previous exchange student, their Colombian “son,” appeared unannounced in his living room for a surprise visit.
“We are building a worldwide family,” says Roy, whose students have come from 8 different countries including Korea, China, Italy, Colombia, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, and England. The Rolins just completed hosting their 10th student, David from Switzerland.
Host families provide room and board, help with transportation, and the emotional support of a family. Students provide their own insurance, personal spending money, and the desire to become part of your family.
“If you’re even considering the idea of hosting a student, we want to talk with you!” says Bissell-Maynard. “Our program couldn’t function without the generosity of families who are willing to open their homes and hearts to these fantastic kids.”
