The Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra (BYSO) presents the 2011-2012 concert season: “New Classics.” The selected pieces were based on what the young musicians listen to on a daily basis. Music written from the year 2000 to the present day, including themes from video games, movie soundtracks, and scores from musicals, will be performed by all 7 orchestras this season. Each conductor has chosen one composition per concert that features the “New Classics” theme, including a suite from the video game Turok 2, an arrangement of Video Games Live, and several movie soundtracks including Up, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, How to Train Your Dragon and The Incredibles.

BYSO Music Director and Youth Symphony Conductor, Teresa Metzger-Howe, discussed the importance of not only working on a piece written by living composers, such as Eastside resident Darren Mitchell, but also having Mitchell attend rehearsals of his original video game score for Turok 2. Best known for his award-winning work on Acclaim Entertainments Turok: The Dinosaur Hunter Series, Darren Mitchell has become one of the major Senior Audio Designers in the interactive gaming industry. He has had numerous press reviews, received several awards, and has had his work and career featured on the Discovery Channel.

Lead by conductor Joseph Kempisty, the BYSO Sinfonia division will be performing selections from the original movie soundtrack to Walt Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl on November 20, 2011. During this performance the flute choir and flute orchestra will be joining Sinfonia to create a full orchestral experience. Lead by conductor Barney Blough, the Premiere Orchestra, made up of youth between 10 and 11 will be playing selections from Dreamwork’s How to Train Your Dragon.

The Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra is a non-profit organization established to provide a positive and stimulating musical environment for students. BYSO uniquely complements and builds upon both school music programs and private instruction. BYSO encourages the development of musical skills and self-confidence, as participants in all ensembles rehearse orchestral literature which appropriately challenges their skills. For over 46 years our program has provided instrumental music experience to match the ability levels of talented youth from early elementary grades through their college years.
