The Bear Creek Grizzlies volleyball program hosted their fourth annual Dig Pink event on Friday, October 5, 2012 in conjunction with the Side-Out Foundation. For the fourth year in a row, the Grizzlies invited the Christian Faith Eagles to participate in the match and the Bear Creek gym was packed with pink-clad fans who cheered for their respective teams. Last year both teams were top-8 finishers at their respective state tournaments. The Eagles finished fourth in the 1B state tournament while the Grizzlies placed fifth in the 2B state tournament. Both teams continue to be highly ranked and played fun yet competitive. For the second time in this series, the Grizzlies were victorious, winning in three straight sets (25-8, 25-7, 25-16). Very strong serving by the Grizzlies tipped the match in Bear Creek’s favor. Top serving performances came from senior Alyssa Jenson (8 aces), sophomore libero Gracie Matthews (5 aces), and senior Michele Brown (4 aces). On offense the Grizzlies were led by senior outside hitter Makena Schoene (11 kills), as well as senior Morgan Cadigan (8 kills) and Jenson (5 kills). Two-time league MVP, Bear Creek’s setter Michele Brown had 18 assists in the match.
Dig Pink is supported by college and middle/high school volleyball coaches and teams across the country. All proceeds benefit Side-Out, which in turn awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families. By charging an admission fee, selling bright pink commemorative T-shirts and concessions, including pink lemonade and strawberry ice cream, Bear Creek earned over $2,260 for the Side-Out Foundation.
