On Saturday, local clean energy business leaders will highlight the enormous opportunity Washington and the Northwest has to transition beyond coal to clean, renewable energy at a Coal to Clean Energy forum hosted by the Sierra Club’s Coal Free PSE campaign.
Currently, Puget Sound Energy generates one-third of its electricity for Washington residents from coal-fired power plants, most of which comes from the Colstrip Generating Facility, located in eastern Montana. Colstrip is considered by the Environmental Protection Agency as one of the dirtiest coal-fired power plant in the West.
Puget Sound Energy is the largest owner of the plant, and is being sued for violations of the Clean Air Act, state CleanWater Act, and several other lawsuits to protect the health and environment of communities from big polluters like the coal-burning facility located in Colstrip, Montana.
Saturday’s event also serves in order to highlight a recently released report showing that a coal-free Washington is within the state’s grasp. This plan is bolstered by an economic study that confirms there are more jobs with clean energy than fossil fuels.
