Lake Washington Institute of Technology’s (LWIT) TRiO Student Support Services and Support Services for Students with Disabilities projects hosted an open house to celebrate the grand opening of The Learning Lab, recently relocated. Senators Rosemary McCauliffe and Andy Hill attended the open house, held Thursday, September 26th. Representation from Congresswoman Suzan DelBene’s office was also in attendance. The Learning Lab is a resource to support student success and is open to all LWIT students. It provides a dynamic learning environment where students work together with other staff, faculty and College Reading and Learning Association certified tutors to better understand how to learn course concepts, access resources and apply principles. The Learning Lab facilitators and certified tutors support students in the sciences, pre-requisites, math, English, and more. International students, students in ESL and GED courses can also receive assistance.
The new lab features resources including new computers, iPads, laptops, headphones, calculators as well as a freestanding skeleton and a SmartBoard. Students taking Anatomy & Physiology can use the SmartBoard to see a 3D representation of human anatomy that can be viewed from different angles and levels of detail to reveal the structure of the human body at a deeper level.
The Federal TRiO Programs are educational opportunity programs designed to motivate and academically support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The national TRiO programs include eight outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities to earn 2 and 4-year degrees and advance to post- baccalaureate programs. Lake Washington Institute of Technology is one of 36 colleges nationally and the only college in the state of Washington to have a TRiO grant dedicated to academically assisting students with disabilities.
The mission of the TRiO Projects at Lake Washington Institute of Technology is to increase the retention, graduation and transfer rates of eligible students. This is accomplished by providing supportive services such as tutoring, academic advising, educational planning, academic success workshops, The Learning Lab, financial education, scholarship and transfer assistance.
