Town Hall Seattle’s Global Rhythms series presents the acclaimed Gerard Edery Trio in a soul-stirring performance of Spirit of Sepharad.
Recognized as a leading musical folklorist, master singer and guitarist, Edery is one of the world’s foremost experts in the wide-ranging music of the Sephardic Diaspora (including repertoire from the Judeo-Arab, Judeo-Spanish, Argentinean, Middle Eastern, Northern European, and Eastern European musical worlds). A recipient of the Sephardic Musical Heritage Award, Edery sings in 15 languages, energizing these repertoires by interpreting them for contemporary audiences and by teaming with some of the world’s most acclaimed musicians; his ensemble has been featured at Carnegie Hall, The United Nations, and The Smithsonian Institute, among many other venues.
Edery’s special brand of world-music fusion prizes formal authenticity and an appreciation of how cultures overlap, parallel each other and often borrow from one another. His multimedia concert, Spirit of Sepharad, traces the unique migration of the Sephardim from medieval Spain across North Africa to the Middle East and beyond. Combining music, dance, narration and illuminating projections, the dynamic performance brings to life all the rich cultural strains of the Sephardic Diaspora with songs and instrumental music of secular and liturgical origin from Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria, Greece, Syria, Turkey, Ancient Persia, The Balkans, Israel, and Kurdistan. It’s the story of a rich cultural heritage that invites the possibility of coexistence, tolerance, respect, and peace among all people.
