Sammamish Citizen Corps Council recently announced the appointment of Carmela Patton as Coordinator and Program Lead of the Sammamish Medical Reserve Corps, (SMRC.) A former Army Medic stationed for four years stationed at Ft. Irwin, CA followed by two years at Ft. Lewis, WA, Carmela moved in 2009 to Sammamish from Kirkland where she and her young
adult children, Natasha and Phoenix, had been lived for eight years.
As first order of business for the Corps this year, Ms. Patton has called a meeting of all current and prospective SMRC Volunteers, and shared her hopes that the meeting will serve to reunite current volunteers and inspire new ones among anyone interested in volunteering their medical and nonmedical service in support of the Sammamish community.
“Sammamish Medical Reserve Corps is organized as a non-profit under the Sammamish Citizen Corps Council umbrella, and we’re nationally sponsored by the U.S. Surgeon General. I’m interested in bringing together our registered MRC Volunteers, but also want to encourage any current and retired doctors, nurses, and dentists; physician, nursing, and dental assistants; paramedics; lab technicians; psychiatrists and mental health workers; pharmacists; along with any interested, non-medical personnel to join us to discuss and set our training and exercise objectives for 2011,” states Patton. “We’re here to provide support to our local hospitals and health departments should a surge in personnel needs develop,” she continued, “We train with local emergency response providers and prepare for public health emergencies through exercises for shelters, mass prophylaxis and vaccination clinics, among other emergency scenarios.”
